AceWonda – A Writer’s Writer at a Crossroads…..

For those that don’t know you , please give a brief intro on who you are , what you do and what you represent?

Jersey native, Howard Alumni, and music writer. I represent people that lead regular lives but possess a specific skill they’ve developed and begin sharing it with the world.

Since the release of your first solo : The Simon Williams project , a. what have you been up to? b. Can we expect a part 2?

a) Since SWP, I’ve been growing as an individual and maturing. Living life and more importantly enjoying it. I went back to school for my masters degree. Married my wife who I met in undergrad at Howard University and began raising a beautiful family. In between family and work, I’ve found time to return to my hobby/passion of music and put out this most recent project with my childhood best friend, you, Cymarshall Law.

b) Part 2, Honestly, I don’t know. I’ve pondered on it and won’t say never but I highly doubt it… What kind of answer is that right lol. Let’s just say, in my experience sequels hardly ever surpass the first body of work. I mean you have Godfather 2 and Raekwon’s Purple Tape 2, which was solid but can’t think of many more off top. Maybe if it was done immediately after the first but I’m in a different head space now.

You have always been a favorite wordsmith of mine, what inspires you to piece together words in the way you do?

Well I’m a big believer in how you say something is just as important as what you say, if not more important. With that said, I’m into how words sound when spoken together, whether back to back, within a bar, or range of bars. I enjoy hard punchlines that hit at face value but really appreciate intricate rhymes schemes, your double entendres, even a sneaky subliminal here and there. I want the listener to THINK a little. Oh and slang, I’m a fan of artists that throw unique terminology into their verses. I don’t mean the trendy word in their neighborhood or viral at the moment, more like that 3rd or 4th synonym in the list to replace a word. The artist should THINK a little too lol.

How would your describe your musical style?

My style is definitely east cost, lyrically driven, and funky. That’s the core foundation, however, i love different styles of production. Based on the landscape laid out by the producer, my style may vary from one project to the next.

What producer would you choose to make the soundtrack of your life and why?

Alchemist! His beats are cinematic and usually at my pace. I’m really laid back and his beats mimic the frequency I’m on. Not to mention they are layered beautifully if you pay attention.

Why should people check for your music over another Artists material? What makes you different?

Check for me because my story is unique, interesting, and my own. I’m am who I am and never try to portray anything more. I share the good with the bad. Drop jewels of knowledge when I can. Ultimately, I love and appreciate the craft of writing, rap as an element of hiphop, and the culture of hiphop as a whole.

Was there a moment in your childhood that let you know you wanted to become an Artist?

Never. I just enjoy writing/rapping and along the way had a few folks tell me they like what they heard.  So when I saw opportunities to create, I did. I’ve really always been a more behind the scenes person. Nowadays, you can probably be any type of artist you choose to be.

What most from your childhood made you into the Man you are today?

My parents splitting up during 10th grade. I was young, already rebellious, and made some choices that lead me to move from New Jersey. That changed everything and put me on the path I feel landed me where I am today.

Favorite Quote?

One of my favorites is, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”

If you owned an NBA Franchise , where would you place it and what would you call it?

New Jersey Rebels

Do you prefer when Artists release consistent material? Or when they time a year or so in between projects? Why?

Both, because it depends on the artist. Some artists are at their pinnacle between a certain window of time and create their best material within that time frame. Other artists’ material/skills can age like fine wine and after away for years, return like they never lost a step, arguably better than before sometimes.
